Dig Dug LEGO Mosaic

May 11th, 2008

I tend to alternate between streaks of building sculptures, then mosaics. After recently ordering a bunch of LEGO chess boards to use as mosaic backing, I may have just switched over to mosaics for a while.

I’ve seen a lot of Donkey Kong, Mario Brothers, and Zelda mosaics. However, one of my favorite games in the early 80’s was Dig Dug, and I haven’t seen a LEGO mosaic of this theme yet. So, here’s my attempt at capturing several of the Dig Dug characters within 32×32 studs (pixels).

Cub Scout LEGO Mosaic

May 6th, 2008

Tomorrow evening I will be leading my son’s Cub Scout den in a LEGO mosaic building activity.  This project will meet one of the requirements for the Artist merit badge – and it provides me an opportunity to try out what I’m planning for the Central Wisconsin Children’s Museum workshop next month.  Here is a mosaic I made to use as a sample.

Each boy will be given a blank base plate 24 studs square (one quarter of an extra large base plate) to fill up with bricks.  The base plates cut easily with a good scissors.  I’m hoping this is a good size for 45-60 minutes of building time.

I will encourage them to create anything they want and offer some suggestions (e.g. collage, geometric or abstract designs, one large picture, letters, numbers, etc.)  I can’t wait to see what they create!

See below for details on the meaning of my collage mosaic and for pictures of the mosaics the kids made READ FULL ARTICLE »

Smaller LEGO Chess Set

May 4th, 2008

Although I’ve done several Chess related LEGO projects, I’m really just an occasional, casual chess player.  (How could I have time for another serious hobby?)  So far I’ve posted about a couple of Giant LEGO Chess Pieces, a Small LEGO Chess Set, and New LEGO Chess Board for the small set.  Today I’m sharing an even smaller set I just completed.  So far I’ve only built one of each piece, since I don’t have enough of the specialized elements needed for a full set.

LEGO Trophies

April 27th, 2008

When you win a LEGO related contest, and the prize is a trophy, shouldn’t it be a LEGO trophy?  I think so, which is why I built these.  They are awards for a website scavenger hunt which I’m holding this weekend for my friends at BrickLink.  I am awarding a larger trophy for first place and several smaller ones as runner-up awards.

Bibs Minifig LEGO Sculpture

April 24th, 2008

My 10x minifig collection is growing out of control (see links at the end of the Full Article to see how many others I’ve already built). Here’s another one!

Giant Engraved LEGO Brick

April 22nd, 2008

After completing my article yesterday about the BrickPlayer Logo Sculpture, I started to think about why I elected to construct the lettering on the bricks sticking out, rather than flush or recessed.  Why I didn’t pick flush is easy.  It’s boring and I was trying to spice up an otherwise simple project.  However, I was starting to second guess my decision to build outward instead of inward.  After all, I had seen real engraved LEGO bricks for sale on BrickLink, and also more recently by LEGO themselves.

So, I decided to build at least one brick recessed, as if engraved, and see how I liked it compared to my work from the day before.  Shown below is a 10x 1×4 brick with recessed lettering (in red) along with the brick from the logo (in blue).

BrickPlayer Logo Sculpture

April 21st, 2008

After I designed the BrickPlayer logo for this website, I realized right away it would make a great sculpture and planned to eventually build it from bricks.  This weekend I built it, and here it is…

I considered replacing the Microsoft Paint generated logo I’m currently using on this website, but so far I’ve been unable to size and clean-up the photographs well enough to be satisfied.

Little LEGO Bird

April 19th, 2008

Earlier this week I posted an article about a LEGO Cat Birdhouse I built.  Although I designed it with features to make it (somewhat) practical as a real birdhouse, I really never intended to put it outside and let the elements destroy good LEGO bricks.  This made me a little sad because the birdhouse would never really have any birds as visitors.  Unless… I built a LEGO bird for it!

LEGO Cat Birdhouse

April 16th, 2008

Last week I posted my first attempt at building a LEGO Birdhouse, which was a scaled-up version of a tiny (minifig-sized) birdhouse.  This week I’ve built another birdhouse.  This one is of a cat head, with the mouth of the cat as the opening for the birds.  I’m also entering this one in the contest (see birdhouse post linked above for more about the contest).

Diver Minifig LEGO Sculpture

April 13th, 2008

I’ve built yet another 10X minifig sculpture to add to my collection. Here it is a diver minifig, complete with air tanks, fins, and an underwater light. (End of Full Article includes links to collection of all 10X minifig sculptures and some instructions.)
