LEGO Checkers Set

March 13th, 2008

While working on another project a few days ago, I had the stud bumps removed from several of my 10X Scale LEGO Bricks.  I was using the bricks for temporary supports and the bumps were in the way.  After removing the bumps, I noticed they appeared to be the perfect size to use as checkers for the improved LEGO Chess Board I had just completed.  I put them on the board, and they looked great, so I built a set.

Female Minifig LEGO Sculptures

March 11th, 2008

Previously, all of the 10X LEGO Minifig sculptures I’ve posted about have been men. In fact, more than one person has referred to my minifig sculptures as ‘LEGO Men’. Today I am introducing a couple of ladies into the mix.

As always I’ve positioned the normal-sized figures on the sculptures for comparison, this time on their wrists. READ FULL ARTICLE »

New LEGO Chess Board

March 9th, 2008

In January I posted an article about a Small LEGO Chess Set I had built. Originally I constructed a board using an X-Large Grey Base Plate and covered it with eight 2×2 tiles and a center 2×2 plate for each square. I was never really happy with this flimsy board, so I’ve taken the time to build a much better board shown below.

I took additional pictures during construction which are shown below. READ FULL ARTICLE »

10X LEGO Motorcycle Sculpture

March 3rd, 2008

In the past I’ve posted several articles on 10X minifigs and brick sculptures. Today I’ve taken my 10X brick sculpting to the next level and I am sharing a small model built to 10X scale. This post features the same circa 1980s motorcycle previously featured in 3X size, but now in 10X size.

There are several other models shown above including the normal sized and 3X versions of the motorcycle, and a new 10X rider minifig. Normal sized versions of both 10X sculptures sit atop their giant counterparts. Many more pictures follow. READ FULL ARTICLE »

Large LEGO Spheres

February 29th, 2008

Eventually every serious LEGO builder constructs a sphere.  Some, like me, build many spheres of various sizes.  Shown below are two 10 inch diameter spheres.  The multi-colored one was built using a design created with a Photoshop filter called Flexify. It is described in detail by Philippe Hurbain on his website. The red open sphere is the same size, and a design I created to answer the common questions I get when I show people a LEGO sphere:  Is it solid or hollow?  -or-  What does it look like inside?

3 New Minifig LEGO Sculptures

February 29th, 2008

It’s time to welcome three new additions to my collection of 10X scale LEGO minifig sculptures.

Each of them has their normal-sized minifigs standing on their hats for comparison. All include new torso designs, new hat designs, and new 10X hand-held accessories. Below are close-up pictures of each with more information. READ FULL ARTICLE »

LEGO 10X Bricks

February 21st, 2008

In addition to the 10X minifig sculptures I have posted over the past month, I’ve also built a bunch of other LEGO elements in the same 10X scale.  Some were built as accessories to the minifig sculptures, and others are just stand-alone items.  Shown below is an assortment of some of these I have built.  Notice the normal sized matching items in the lower left corner of the picture for comparison.

Here are some additional pictures of these and other items in this same 10X scale. READ FULL ARTICLE »

LEGO 3X Sculptures

February 19th, 2008

As a change of pace from the 10X scale projects I’ve been working on lately, I decided to play around with 3X up-scaling of LEGO bricks and models.  To get started, I did some simple bricks and plates shown below.

3x_2.JPG

One of the interesting aspects of the 3x bricks above is that since they are topped with tiles, including round 2×2 tiles for the bumps, no regular-sized bumps are visible.  This makes these scaled-up bricks appear (especially in photographs) to actually be giant bricks.

Once I built a few more basic bricks and tiles, I wanted to build a simple model in 3x scale. I built a small motorcycle similar to one from a 1980 set I got as a child.  The model was pretty simple to scale up. The only area that took some tinkering was the wheels, especially the fork.  Shown below are pictures of the completed motorcycle with the small scale inpiration. Fire Fighter Minifig LEGO Sculpture

February 14th, 2008

Here is the latest in my series of 10X scale LEGO minifig sculptures. This time I decided to build a fire fighter.

lego_fire_minifig_1.JPG

I was able to reuse the torso and head design from my previous minifig sculpting projects. However, I did need to change the color scheme for the front of the torso and design his unique hat. I also built an axe for him to hold.

Here’s another picture of him, with his hat removed and in his hand. READ FULL ARTICLE »

Space Minifig LEGO Sculpture

February 4th, 2008

Last week I wrote about my Luke Skywalker LEGO Sculpture, here is a second installment of what will certainly become a regular topic, another 10X Scale LEGO Minifig sculpture. This time I’ve built a sculpture of a classic space minifig designed to match those from around 1980 when I first got Hooked on LEGO bricks.

LEGO Space Minifig Full

This sculpture shares the same head and body design as Luke Skywalker. However, I did have to build a helmet and air tanks, as well as make some brick color changes to the torso and face to match the small figure. I’ve also included a lot of pictures to highlight the modular design of the sculpture. It’s worth noting that the helmet, head, airtanks, arms and hands are easily removable. (I didn’t press the helmet, head or torso to each other.) READ FULL ARTICLE »
